Research

what I do.

The experience inside the company should be one aligned with our today’s necessities, understanding and motivations. Compass is an internal app that all of us use to add our working hours, and manage absence, benefits and time reporting. My research methods helped me to create a common language for everybody (happy paths) that is easy to learn, produces a positive faster response time for its users and shows what the company is all about and the place to be. Through observation techniques, task analysis, user interviews, surveys and empathy maps I researched how the user thinks and behaves based on their needs and motivations. I obtained quantitative data that can be transformed into usable statistics. Also, I gathered through contextual observation, usability tests and interviews, qualitative insights about users.

why I do.

I opted for a mix of quantitative and qualitative data and insights. I believe in the strong connection that both of the methods have between them. They blend well together giving the research a strong base for future endeavours and scaling of the business. It revealed to me that 90% of the participants were unhappy to have an old-fashioned user interface that was creating frustrations and negative feelings. I discovered with them the pain points in usability tests: broken taxonomy, non-intuitive design, steep learning curve and an old-fashion UI. The most common blockage was a modal that told the user: If you want to continue, press Cancel. This contradiction in taxonomy gave more confusion to the tool's already broken usability.

what is the result?

The evaluation found that 90% wanted a better tool to add their working hours, to manage absence, benefits and time reporting. Also, another frustration found in 90% was the time spent on the tool. The task per time was huge, 10 seconds it took to the task after pressing the button Save and retrieve the information. Sometimes, even more. The company had more than 2,500 people and that was a huge blocker.

what is the lesson?

Employees embrace technology and they understand that this science helps them in their daily endeavours. They also need applications to make their task easier and more productive. By helping them in achieving their goals we help the business in having satisfied and happy employees. Re-designing the time management tool gave me more understanding of how people think, feel and use a product. Improving the user interface, I improved as well the conversion rate of employees to do a desired action and complete it.Conversion rate = (Conversions or goals achieved / Total visitors) * 100
